strata

strata (2024), for ten or more players, was commissioned for the Free Range Orchestra and to be performed in 2025 at Canterbury Christ Church University’s WinterSound Festival and the Royal Musical Association Study Day: Musical Glocalities and their Influence: Sound, Geography, Community.

The piece unfolds slowly and quietly, with all sounds fading to and from silence. Players select lines from an open score and follow an overarching sense of time and structure until players choose whether to play cyclically, allowing layers of sound to accumulate and overlap

Through this process, strata creates a shifting, fragile soundscape that emphasises both the independence of each player as well as their unity as an ensemble.
