an outside space

#YouMeUsOutside

an outside space is a collaborative community arts project commissioned by Ideas Test for the You Me Us project. You Me Us is a project aimed to reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation in Medway and Swale through creativity, with the first version of the project taking place between April and June 2021.

an outside space is about connecting with the outdoors, alone or together, be it in nature, looking out of a window, in a garden, on a balcony, queueing outside a supermarket, or walking down the street. For this project, participants expressed their experiences of outside spaces through creative activities, such as drawing, painting, photography, audio recordings, video, stories, descriptions, or poetry.

The project took place in two parts, You Me Us and You Me Us Lite. For You Me Us, a small group of participants collaborated on an experimental film documenting their collective experiences over the duration of the project. For You Me Us Lite, participants shared their experiences of the outdoors through creativity, and these creations can be seen in this archive.

an outside space is part of a larger project and based on a postcard from Sophie Stone's composition postcard-sized pieces (2020) which encourages engagement with an outside space through creativity.
